Walter Alois Svoboda, 75, of Waterloo, died Sunday, November 7, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City from heart failure.
He was born December 8, 1934, in David City, Neb., son of Rudy and Tillie Sypal Svoboda.
He married Virginia Pleskac July 13, 1963 in David City, Nebraska. Walter attended St. Benedict’s College in Atchison, Kansas from 1953-1957 and then enlisted in the U.S Navy from 1957-1961. He then attended the University of Iowa Physical Therapy School, graduating in 1963. He was employed at Covenant Medical Center and its predecessor hospitals for 47 years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary (Duane) Brause of Apple Valley, Minn and Lynn (Steven) Collins of Clarendon Hills, Ill; two sons, Patrick (Kathleen) of Naperville, Ill., and Bradley (Jessica) of Lockport, Ill. and nine grandchildren, Michaela and Kate Brause, Rachel and Mitchell Collins, Samantha and Alissa Svoboda and Paige, Sean and Erin Svoboda; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Danahy of Papillion, Neb., and Virginia G. Svoboda of Schaumburg, Ill.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Valerian, Richard and Alfred.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward Catholic Church, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets Post 31.
Interment will be on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 8:30am in St. Francis (Center) Cemetery, David City, Ne.
Public visitation will be from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7:00 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Thursday.
