Thomas J. Shonka, 80, of Dodge passed away Sunday, March 18, 2018 at the Fremont Health Hospital.

Thomas J. Shonka was born August 16, 1937 in Schuyler to Edward and Eshter (Ehernberger) Shonka. After graduation from Schuyler High School, Thomas enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1956 where he served until 1960. Upon being discharged, Thomas returned to Nebraska and married Mary Ann Nemec at St. Mary’s Tabor Catholic Church on June 20, 1961. Thomas and Mary Ann then moved to a farm south of Dodge where they have resided the rest of their life. He was a member of St. Mary’s Tabor Catholic Church until the church closed. Thomas then became a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge and was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Howells branch.
A devoted farmer and cattleman, Thomas loved listening to Czech Polka music, watching Gunsmoke, western movies, and game shows. Thomas loved to attend cattle sales, especially in the Sandhills. Family was very important to Thomas but he had a special place in his heart for all of his grandchildren. Thomas was extremely proud of his Czech heritage.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ann, of Dodge; son: Paul B. (Jean Marie) Shonka of Dodge and their children Jessica and Justin; and daughter: Lori (Steven) Kathol of Dodge and their children Matthew, Phillip and Nathan; sister-in-law Helen Shonka of David City and many nieces and nephews.

Thomas is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Adolph (Marcella) Shonka, Edward Shonka; sister Helen (Leo) Eller, and nephew Dave Eller.
