Shirley was born on January 12, 1936 in Swett, South Dakota to Leonard and Marie (Budin) Shuster. Soon after her birth, the family moved to Schuyler, Nebraska. Shirley attended and graduated from Schuyler High School. After graduating high school, she obtained her “normal” teaching certificate and taught for one year. On August 7, 1957 Shirley married Norbert Langhorst at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Schuyler. The couple farmed for many years south of Howells.
Living out on the farm Shirley always led a busy life raising five children, cooking for the family and always having something fresh out of the oven for a treat. Shirley and Norbert retired from farming in 1994 when they moved to Howells. She also worked various jobs putting ads together for the Howells Journal, working at the Bluebird Nursery in Clarkson, and volunteering with the American Legion Auxiliary and the S.S. Peter and Paul Christian Mothers. In her free time Shirley enjoyed cheering on the Huskers, completing puzzle books, watching game shows, crocheting, relaxing on their patio, and spending countless hours in her garden. Shirley’s family meant everything to her and any time she could spend with her children and grandchildren was time she cherished most.
Shirley is survived by her children: Cindy (Greg) McVicker of Lincoln; Mark (Lisa) Langhorst of Ashland; Diane (Jim) Powell of Delafield, Wisconsin; John Langhorst of Lexington, Kentucky, and Michael (Denise) Langhorst of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
