Sam was born October 28, 1943 in Columbus to William J. and Martha (Lodl) Balak. He graduated from Schuyler High School in 1961 and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Sam was the creator and writer of the "Bullpen" in the Schuyler Sun, managed the Schuyler Golf Club for many years, was Schuyler handi-van driver, member of Ducks Unlimited,,Knights of Columbus, Schuyler Golf Club, American Legion, served as a volunteer for the NSAA Golf Championship, voice of Schuyler Warrior football for over 20 years, had been involved in Junior Golf, youth baseball and softball and served in the Army Reserve. Sam loved Husker and Schuyler sports of all kinds and Nebraska Wesleyan men's Golf. He enjoyed playing Darta, hunting and sharing stories about his experiences. Sam died October 5th at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha of complications from leukemia at the age of 66. Sam is survived by his wife, Sheri of Schuyler; son, Brett of Omaha; daughter, Kara (Mrs. Brian) Peters of Lincoln; two grandchildren, Keaton Peters and Isabella Balak; three step-gandchildren, Nathan, Kerri and Dan Peters; one brother, William (Carol) Balak of Omaha. Family suggest memorial to Schuyler Community Schools Foundation or Schuyler Senior Center. Funeral lunch will be served at the Schuyler Golf Club.
