Ronald C. Schmidt was born on July 18, 1937 in Russell Springs, Kansas to Roy and Evalyn (Wood) Schmidt. He was the youngest of three children. Ron graduated from Danbury High School in 1955.
While in Dodge Ron met Phyllis Rupprecht, and they were later married on August 18, 1962 at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Howells. Over the years Ron worked for Baumert Furniture, Faltin Meat Market, and for 34 years at Howells Auto Supply. He also was a former member of the Howells Village Board, a member of the Community Club, and served on the Village Park Board.
Ron enjoyed fishing trips with friends, grilling, and tending to his vegetable garden. His love of cooking for the community was seen at many events including the Howells Community Catholic School Fun Fest, weddings, Fireman’s Steak Fry’s, Fish Fry’s at the Double E Bar, and various events at the Howells Legion Club. He also enjoyed trips to the casino with Phyllis, playing Keno downtown, and a game or pitch of sheep head with family and friends. Those in Howells who regularly attended fish fry’s at Double E witnessed first hand Ron’s love of being able to make music playing the “broom handle”.
Ron is survived by five children: Mike Schmidt (significant other Mary Finch) of Fremont, Lori Meiergerd of West Point, Sue (Kevin) Wragge of Howells, Steve (Jodene) Schmidt of Dodge, and David Schmidt of Howells; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Phyllis in 2006, son-in-law Ken Meiergerd, sister Darlene Berens, and brother Roy Jr.
