IN LIEU OF FLOWERS: Memorials In Care of the Family.
Olga Marie (Svoboda)Janak was born on May 22, 1920 to Frank and Christine(Jirovsky)Svoboda on a farm near the original Yanka, located along a railroad track about half way between David City and Brainard.
She graduated from District 78, located in the southeast corner of the farm, in May of 1933. In those days, 8th graders took their tests at the Butler County Courthouse in David City.
She received the sacraments of Baptism, Penance, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation at Assumption Catholic Church in Appleton. She married Ernest R, Janak on September 11, 1940 at Appleton. They moved in with his parents and started to clean up a house about one half mile west of there that had been empty for about 8 yrs. They were parishioners of Holy Trinity Church in Brainard until they bought a farm west of St. Francis Church, Center, where they lived for 30 years. Olga held many offices in Center and worked the first spaghetti dinner that started in November of 1955. She raised many ducks, geese and turkeys.
Her hobbies were sewing clothes for herself and her four daughters and also making men's suits for her husband and two sons. She also crocheted many afghans for her family. After her youngest son started school, she worked in the field preparing the ground for planting. They farmed land south of Brainard to west of David City. She always had a large garden and canned many quarts and gallons of fruits and vegetables. She also had a great love for flowers.
They had their first family dinner in 1978 for Christmas in their new house that she helped design in David City. She held several offices in the Seminary Club and was one of the first drivers of the Senior Center and helped organize Perpetual Adoration at St. Mary's Church before the chapel was built. She was a member of Catholic Workman and sang with the Butler County Czech Singers.
