Milada "Mildred" Polodna

Funeral Mass for Milada B. “Mildred” Polodna, age 87 of Howells, will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, October 1st at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Howells. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 4 PM to 7 PM and rosary will be recited at 7 PM. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Milada died September 27, 2016 at Golden Living Center in Clarkson where she had been a resident since 2013.

Milada is the daughter of Frank L. and Bessie (Herout) Coufal and was born February 2, 1929 in Rochester, MN. She graduated from the Colfax County Rural School District 51 in 1941 and from Howells High School in 1945. She then attended Midland College in Fremont and received her teaching certificate. She taught grades K-8 for 4 years in country schools near Howells. She and Milo L. Polodna were married September 14, 1949 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Tabor and they made their home on the Polodna family homestead in Stanton County. Mildred made beautiful cakes for hundreds of local weddings for 40+ years and was employed at Beverly Nursing Home in Clarkson as a cook for 15 years. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Altar Society, Howells Women’s Club, Ladies Auxiliary and an extension club.

Mildred is survived by son Gary (Carter Laing) Polodna of Littleton, CO and their children, Michael and James, son Roland (Mindy) Polodna of Howells, daughter Mary (Steven) Rethwisch of Fort Dodge, IA and their children, Sarah, Rachel and Nathan; brother, Gene (Hazel) Coufal of Fremont; and sister-in-law, Triena Coufal of Granbury, TX.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Milo (7/5/1996), and infant son, Joseph; and her brother, Elvin Coufal.

Family suggests memorials to St. John’s Improvement Fund.
Funeral lunch will be served at St. John's Auditorium.
