Melvin Robert Poulas was born July 24,1923 in Colfax County to John F. and Emma (Fendrick) Poulas. He attended rural District 61 school. Melvin joined the U.S. Army on March 21, 1944 and was wounded in action on October 27, 1944, for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was discharged on September 21, 1945. On November 17, 1953, Melvin married Louise Luecke. After her death Melvin married Roma McDuffee Vanicek. Melvin was a farmer, a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he served two terms as a council member. He was also a member of McLeod Post #47 of the American Legion and Hsepen-Mitchell Post 4836 of the V.F.W. and the DAV. He loved farming, playing cards and listening to polka music on Sunday afternoons and road trips to eat out. Melvin is survived by three sons, Roger (Sandy) Poulas of Springfield, OH, Alan Poulas of David City, NE; Gary (Theresa) Poulas of Bellwood, NE; grandchildren: Meghan Poulas of Lincoln, and Katelyn Poulas, Ciera Poulas, Gunner Poulas and Emily Poulas all of Bellwood; and a sister-in-law Anita Poulas of Fremont. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives Louise (10/13/1984) and Roma (5/23/1999) 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Melvin passed away Saturday, August 27, 2011 in Fremont at the age of 88 years, 1 month and 3 days.
