Memorials: Family Wishes
Leonard Polivka was born on August 26, 1918 on the farm northeast of Brainard to Edward and Agnes (Pelan) Polivka. He attended District 48 grade school and graduated from Brainard High School in 1936. He entered the Army in September of 1942 where he served as a truck mechanic and in radio communication operations. He was honorably discharged in November of 1944.
Leonard operated the family farm after his father passed away in 1949, raising cattle, hogs and crops. He married Margaret Ourada on October 14, 1950 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Omaha. Two children were born to this union.
Leonard was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard, Pink Sisters Auxilliary and Rejda Legion Post #273. Leonard enjoyed Czech music, especially a nice waltz, and old, traditional country/western music. He always enjoyed visiting with family, friends and neighbors on topics ranging from crops and rainfall to current global events. Leonard treasured his trip with Margaret to the Czech Republic to experience the rich culture of their Czech heritage. Leonard especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons who regard him as a role model and hold lasting memories of his warm smile, and his calm, gentle and compassionate demeanor. They just liked being around Grandpa.
Leonard is survived by his son, David Polivka of Brainard, his daughter, Marilyn (Dahlas) Baalhorn of Lincoln, two grandsons, Brett Baalhorn, and Riley (Anna Butierres) Baalhorn, great-grandson, Isaac Baalhorn, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret in 2014, and one sister, Martha Micheletti.
