LaVerna Mae Brichacek was born April 21, 1931 in Rogers, Nebraska to Frank and Emma (Sedlacek) Zoubek. She attended District 56 in Rogers and graduated from Schuyler High School. She attended Normal College in Wayne and received her teaching certificate. LaVerna loved teaching students at Districts 1 and 9, both one-room schoolhouses in rural Rogers area. She then found the love of her life and moved to rural Schuyler to start a home and family. LaVerna and Ladislav R. Brichacek were married April 3, 1956 at St. Augustine’s Church in Schuyler. They farmed together in Midland Precinct until moving to Schuyler in 2002. Until Lad’s death in 2012, they enjoyed working on the house and yard, going on bus trips, dancing and visiting casinos.
LaVerna always had a garden, both vegetables and flowers, and was a great cook and baker. She kept her sewing machine busy making clothes, quilts and any new pattern she could find or make. She liked to crotchet and, in her 70s, taught herself to needle tat. She was a past member of the Dry Creek Extension Club and had taught Second Grade CCD for many years. She also kept active in town with the Schuyler Historical Society and as a volunteer at the Schuyler Senior Center, when she wasn’t playing cards there.
In 2022, LaVerna moved to an apartment at St. Joseph’s Court in David City. She enjoyed visiting, sharing stories and doing activities with her new friends, whom she called her family. LaVerna died Sept. 28, 2024 at Butler County Health Care Center in David City.
LaVerna is survived by two sons, John (Bonnie) Brichacek and Edward Brichacek, both of Schuyler; one daughter, Lisa Brichacek of Wahoo; three grandchildren, Matt (Cassi) Brichacek and Pete (Emily) Brichacek, both of Omaha, and Nick Brichacek (special friend Kayla Black) of Schuyler; great-grandchildren, Haylie, Candace, Pennie, Sadie, Brayden and Camden, all of Omaha; sister, Eleanor Pacas of Schuyler; brother-in-law, Lloyd (Betty) Brichacek of Schuyler; and many family by heart.
