Laura J. Schmidt, 51, of Garrison, died Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at her residence in Garrison.
Funeral Services will be Monday, January 4, 2010 at 10:30am in Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Rising City with Rev. David Palomaki officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Viewing will be Sunday, from 2-5pm at Chermok Funeral Home; and Monday, one hr before services at the church.
Memorials may be given in care of the family.
Laura J. Schmidt was born on February 12, 1958 in David City to George and Mabel(Daro)Huisenga. She attended Garrison Grade School and went on to graduate from David City High School in 1976. She attended one year at Platte College.
She worked at Seward County Court as a legal secretary for 10 yrs and then became a Butler County Court Magistrate for several years. She then went to work for Egr and Birkel as a legal secretary and has worked with them for 15 years.
She married Dan Schmidt on June 9, 1990 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Rising City. .
Laura was very active in community events. She was a member and past president and vice-president of the David City High School Alumni Association; She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a past board member. She was also the chairperson of the church's 125th anniversary celebration. She taught Sunday School and was active in the Special Olympics program. She was also involved for many years as a supporter of Children's International, and just recently received a certificate of appreciation from the program.
She was involved in Vaudville Days and Summer Theatre. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, performing in musical skits in many community events and for family and friends. Laura liked to work crossword puzzles and was an avid collector of Wizard of Oz and Abraham Lincoln memorabilia. She liked Betty Boop, Looney Toons, Eeyore and couldn't miss her favorite soap opera: "All My Children".
Laura is survived by her husband Dan; son: Lucas Schmidt of the home; twin daughters: Jill and Jennifer Schmidt also of the home; step-sons: Wayne Schmidt of Cheyenne, WY; Adam Schmidt of David City and Brian Schmidt of Torrington, WY; her mother: Mabel Huisenga of David City; two brothers: George(Nida)Huisenga of Grimes, Iowa, and Howard(Kahy)Huisenga of Joplin, Mo; four sisters: Joyce(Ed)Draper of Glenwood, Iowa; Maxine Freeman of Garrison, Susie(Larry)Sedlak of Dwight; and Mary Williams of Lincoln and two step-grandchildren. Her parents-in-law: Raymond and Lois Schmidt of Cheyenne, WY.
She was preceded in death by her father: George Huisenga and two brothers: Robert and Richard Huisenga.
