Johnnie R. Sabata

Johnnie R. Sabata, 86, of David City, was called to heaven on Thursday, March 1, 2018.

Johnnie, son of John and Ella(Kudlacek) Sabata, was born November 9, 1931 on his parents' farm in Center Township. He attended rural schools until the 8th grade, then worked on the family farm. His love of farming continued throughout his life.

Johnnie married Linda Lou Vanderkolk on February 22, 1953 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in David City. In 1967 they adopted a baby girl. Together they raised their only child Lisa Lurae and gave her a wonderful life.

Johnnie worked for McFarland Plumbing, Wright's Feed Mill and Schuyler Farmers Grain Company. He managed the Garrison Farmers Coop for 18 years and farmed his family farm west of David City for many years. He also worked for DC Manufacturing, Henningson Foods, and on Rural Road Maintenance. After he retired, Johnnie enjoyed helping other farmers, especially during harvest.

Johnnie was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and the David City Volunteer Fire Department. He was past N.C. of Harmony Lodge #18 Odd Fellows. He was an active Master Mason in Fidelity Lodge #51 in David City for 34 years. Johnnie was initiated as an Entered Apprentice on July 28, 1983, passed to the degree of Fellowcraft Mason on September 20, 1983, and was raised to the degree of Master Mason on November 1, 1983. He was very active in Fidelity Lodge, having served as Worshipful Master from 1992-1995, as well as serving on various committees and in other capacities. Johnnie was also a York Rite Mason, in which he was a member of the Orient Chapter #18 Royal Arch Masons.

Johnnie and his special friend Kathy loved listening and dancing to Polka music and going on Polka band bus trips. He enjoyed all things Czech, including dumplings, sauerkraut and kolaches. Johnnie was a very good carpenter and all around handyman, who loved spending time at the cabin he built at Lake Ericson. He and Kathy spend many winters in Arizona.

He was a loving and devoted father and friend and he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his daughter: Lisa Lurae Sabata and special friend: Kathy Machal, both of David City; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Marcella Kozisek and brother: Henry Sabata.
