John Mitchell

January 13, 1922 — February 25, 2009

John Roy Mitchell, 87, of David City passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Monday, March 2, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 - 7 pm at Chermok Funeral Home with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at the St. Francis Cemetery in Center.
John was born on January 13, 1922 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia to Floyd Hurt and Mary Lou (Meador) Mitchell. He graduated from Callans High School in Callans, Virginia and on July 21, 1942 he married Margaret Ann (Peggy) Gilmore at St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
John was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. After 44 years at IBM, John retired to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. After a fire, started by hurricane Isabel destroyed his home in 2003, John moved to David City.
He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW, Elks, Loyal Order of the Moose, where he received the Pilgrim Degree and Legion of the Moose.
John enjoyed spending time with his new David City friends, especially at Northside, taking care of his wife, and being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife Margaret Ann (Peggy) of David City; daughter: Carolyn (Frank) Brabec, of David City; grandchildren: Daniel Frank Brabec, of Ames, IA and Pamela Margaret Scott, of Columbus, NE; great grandsons: Noah Frank Scott and Maxwell Douglas Scott; and sisters Mary Juanita Anderson of Charlottesville, VA and Morton Lucinda Griffin of Culpeper, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father: Charles Warren; infant daughter: Barbara Jane Mitchell; brothers: James Sanford Mitchell and Robert Hurt Mitchell.
