Harold A. Shope, 73, of David City, died Friday, July 27, 2007 at his residence. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, July 31 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in David City. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 4-6pm Monday at the Chermok Funeral Home in David City. Memorials may be given in care of the family.
Harold was born on August 30, 1933 to Clarence and Priscilla(Hutchings) Shope on a farm near Coleridge, Nebraska. He left the farm to join the Army in 1954. He was discharged from the Army at Fort Carson, Colorado in 1957 and returned to the Hartington-Coleridge area to work for an electrical construction company. He joined Butler County Rural Public Power District as a lineman in 1959, retiring after 39 years of service to the District. He married Catherine Bartholome on Jan. 29, 1961 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in David City.
Harold was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. Active in the church, he was a former lay minister, on the board of trustees and superintendent of youth ministries. He loved to work outdoors, bowl, travel and spend time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine; Son and daughter-in-law: Patrick and Evelyn Shope of Warner Robins Georgia, three grandchildren: Cullen, John(Jack) and Evan. Three sisters: Darlene(R.L.)Ponder of Roy, Utah; Ellen(Gary)Jacobsen of Omaha and Linda Hinrichs of Fremont. He was preceded in death by his parents.
