George L. Hasik died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008 just shy of his 89th birthday after many years of complications from diabetes. He dealt with his disabilities with grace and humor. He will be remembered as a loving family man, a jokester, who enjoyed music, dancing, sports, playing cards, and gardening. He was born in Loma, Nebraska on Feb. 21, 1919 and grew up in Abie and Bruno. He played baseball, basketball, and the trumpet in a local orchestra and Czech polka bands. He was very proud of his Czech heritage. He graduated from St. Procopius College (now Benedictine Univ.) in Illinois. His pre-med studies at Creighton Univ. (Omaha) were interrupted when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in WWII. George was awarded the Silver Star and a Purple Heart for his service. He was on a bombing mission over North Africa as co-pilot when his plane was hit, seriously injuring him and other crew members, killing others. Though injured, he heroically flew the plane back to base. He spent 18 months recovering from his wounds. In 1942 George married Adeline Fencl. They raised ten children together while he served as a career Air Force officer. He was transferred to Hamilton AFB and the family moved to Novato, California in 1956. His children are all graduates of Novato High School. His second career, as a teacher, began after he received his credentials from San Francisco State Univ. He enjoyed teaching at Hannah Boys Center in Sonoma, the Richmond school district, and San Quentin prison. He especially enjoyed teaching Math and Science. He was widowed twice. Adeline, his wife of 40 years, died in 1982. He married Margaret Riha in 2003. They lived in Lincoln, NE until she passed away in 2007. George returned to California to be near his children in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Dvorak (Woodrow) of Brainard, NE. But he is survived by so many who loved him: 2 sisters-Gladyce Lee of Mesa, AZ and Norma Stara (Albin) of David City, NE; 3 sons-George (Linda), Howard (Christeen), and Jim (Laura Saunders); 7 daughters-Marybeth Compton (Raleigh Bettiga), Fran Hasik (Al Johnson), Joanne Dallara (Tony), Ellen Scherba (George), Teri Hasik (Wim Hoxie), Shawn Hasik, and Cheryl Jayne (Mike); 10 grandchildren who called him GG-Crista Romano (Marc), Matthew & Jenny Hasik, Zannie & Megan Dallara, Dan & Ali Ewing, Cody, Tyler, & Lucas Jayne; 2 great-grandchildren-Alex and Ava Romano; and many loving nieces, nephews, and generations of extended family.
