Eulalia Lorene (Engel) Dahmke, 90, of David City, passed away on Saturday June 11, 2011 at David Place in David City.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church (2200 25th Street) in Columbus with Rev. Wayne Nestor officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. There will be no visitation.
Memorials have been suggested to Jackson Cemetery in Duncan, NE, Trinity Lutheran Church-Columbus, David City Library, David City Rotary Club or the Butler County Health Care Center.
Eulalia Lorene (Engel) Dahmke was born on June 22, 1920 to Oscar and Ottilia (Grossnicklaus) Engel in Platte County , two miles west of Duncan, Nebraska. She was baptized in Columbus at the German Evangelical Protestant Church . Her parents were charter members of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church when it was formed on March 23, 1928. She sang in the choir for several years and also attended Sunday School, where Ottilia was a teacher. Eulalia and her sister Glendoris were confirmed on April 9, 1933.
She attended Duncan Elementary School and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1938. She graduated from Van Sants Business College in Omaha in 1942. She worked for the Omaha Cold Storage Company for several years and in 1946 met Chris Dahmke (of Millard, Nebraska) at the Chermot Ballroom in Omaha.
Chris and Eulalia were married on November 16, 1947 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Columbus . They lived in Columbus until 1956, Osceola from 1957 to 1971 and David City from 1971 to the present. Eulalia was involved in many church and community activities, including Eastern Star and Job’s Daughters, St. Paul ’s Lutheran Church in Osceola where she served as financial secretary and LCW treasurer.
At Trinity Lutheran Church she joined Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Pawnee Nile Club and Naphis Temple , Daughters of the Nile and Harmony Chapter #13 O.E.S. in Columbus . Chris and Eulalia volunteered for the Friends of the David City Library, and managed the David City Chamber of Commerce office for many years. In 1989 she joined the Rotary Club in David City and served as president in 1999-2000.
She is survived by her husband Chris, daughter Patricia of Elkhorn, Ne, and son Mark of Lincoln, Ne, sister-in-law Mary Ann Steinauer, nieces and nephews, and preceded in death by her brother Armand, sister Glendoris, parents Oscar and Ottilia Engel, sister-in-law Thelma Dahmke Nisley and Chris’ parents, Fred and Marie (Backhaus) Dahmke.
