It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eugene Leopold Coufal (Gene), a beloved resident of David City, NE. Gene was born on January 15, 1929 on the family farm south of Bruno, NE to the parents James J. Coufal and Martha H. Kozisek, and peacefully departed from this world on December 3, 2023.
Gene was a pillar of strength and a source of inspiration to all who knew him. He lived a life defined by integrity, kindness, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. Gene's warm smile and gentle nature touched the hearts of everyone he encountered.
Throughout his life, Gene was known for his remarkable work ethic and dedication to his businesses. He was a skilled businessman, known for his friendly demeanor and inclusive attitude. Gene volunteered in numerous civic organizations such as Brainard Legion, David City Sertoma, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Jaycees, Modern Woodmen Jr Services Club, David Place organizing committee, among others, Gene was active in St. Mary's Church where he served as commentator for over 40 years and building committee chairman for St. Mary's Grade School Didier Edition. He was a public conservator for over 30 people and he served as Master of Ceremonies for many local weddings of his friends and family. Gene served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict 6th Armored division from 1951-1953. Gene's public and volunteer services will forever stand as a testament to his talent and passion for helping others.
Beyond his professional and community accomplishments, Gene was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is preceded in death by his parents James J. Coufal and Martha H. Kozisek and he is survived by his wife of 68 years, Delores (Stara) Coufal of St. Joseph's Villa, David City; brother Leander Coufal (Jean Lavicky) of Bruno, NE; children and their partners and families, daughter Sharon A. Hansen (Mike Hansen) of Waterloo, NE; James L. Coufal (Ronaldo Vieira) of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren Jeff Hansen (Nadine de Beer) of Elkhorn, NE and Lisa Rutherford (Dolan Rutherford) of Elkhorn, NE; great grandchildren Rhylan Rutherford and Kinsley Hansen both of Elkhorn, NE. He cherished his family above all else and took great joy in spending time with his loved ones. Gene's wisdom, guidance, and unconditional love will be dearly missed by his family.
Gene leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and resilience. He will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his gentle spirit, and his genuine kindness towards others. Gene's memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
