Emil Joseph Beran, Jr., 81, of Howells, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, March 21st at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Schuyler. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Svoboda Funeral Home North Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will continue Saturday at the funeral home from 9:00 A.M. until 9:45 A.M. Burial will be in the Midland Bohemian Slavonic Cemetery (Sousek Cemetery) in rural Clarkson, Nebraska.
Emil was born August 30. 1933 at Schuyler Memorial Hospital to Emil and Bessie (Bukacek) Beran. He attended Colfax County rural school District 11, Schuyler High School (class of 1951) and for one year the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
He married H. Nadine Cerny on May 19, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Schuyler, NE. The newlyweds lived on the farm where Emil grew up, representing the third generation to care for the family farm. He tended and loved the farm until his death. Emil enjoyed working the farm and raising livestock. He also enjoyed woodworking, rock hounding and family fireworks.
In addition to caring for the farm, Emil was also employed by Husker Co-op in Schuyler, a member of the Farmers Union; and sat on the boards of District 11 Rural School and the Midland Bohemian Slavonic Cemetery (Sousek Cemetery). He managed a rural route for delivery of the Sunday Omaha World Herald for 10 years. In the ‘50s, he helped complete delivery of telephone communications to his neighborhood.
Emil and Nadine loved fishing together. Many trips to Minnesota lakes were enjoyed in their nearly 62 years together. Their love of fishing spawned many fish fries with friends and family.
Emil is survived by his wife, children: Jan (Donna) of Lincoln, Kathy (Steve) Niedbalski of Kearney and twins Emil James of Omaha and Jean (Scott) Spilker of Beatrice; 14 Grandchildren: Sarah (Chris) Short, Jan Michael (Heidi) Beran, Katlyn Beran, Stacy (Brendan) Cope, Theresa (Scott) Burdick, Katie (Cory) Clark, Paul Niedbalski, Phil (Dani) Niedbalski, Peter (Erin) Niedbalski, Rachel Niedbalski, Rebecca Niedbalski, Anna (Brenton) Erikson, Nathan Spilker, John Spilker and 10 great-grandchildren: Savannah, Cole and Christian Short, Jackson and Cohen Beran, Madison, Jacob and Nicholas Burdick, Izabela and Aurora Clark, numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by parents, brother William Beran and wife Eunice, sister Libbie Novotny and husband George, and great grandson Damien Joseph Clark.
