Elva was born on August 2, 1909 in Schuyler to John and Sophia (Severa) Steinberger. She was the 4th of 5 children in the family. She graduated from Schuyler High School in 1927, took some teaching classes in Lincoln and taught for 3 years in Colfax County. Elva married Walter Pokorny on June 24, 1930 at Heun Church. They farmed north of Schuyler until 1975 when they moved into Schuyler. In the mid 1960’s they survived a tornado that took everything except their farm house. Elva belonged to an Extension Club, a reading club and the Chat and Sew Club. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, baking and spending time with her family. She cared for Walter at home until shortly before his death on June 22, 1986. She lived in her Schuyler home until October 2011 when she moved to david place in David City where she died March 13, 2013. Elva is survived by nephews, Robert (Camille) Steinberger of Lincoln, Tom (Sharon) Stibal of Lincoln, Larry (Sharon) Steinberger of Lexington, NE, Allan (Mary) Steinberger of David City. Paul (Deanna) Pokorny of Linwood; nieces, Mitzi (Terry) Robb of Spokane and Margie Phelan of Gretna, NE; many great nieces and great-great nieces. Elva is preceded in death by her husband, Walter; sisters Wilma (Tom) Stibal and Helen (Bill) Sweenie; brothers, Otto (Ida) Steinberger and Frank (Marjorie) Steinberger; cousins; two nieces, Alice Lamberty and Valma (Dale) Krieger and two nephews, John Robert Pokorony and Alan (Dorothy) Pokorny. Funeral lunch will be served at St. Mary's Social Center following burial in the Schuyler Cemetery.
