Doyle Fozzard, 91, of Rising City, passed away March 31, 2016 in Columbus.
Doyle was born on September 3, 1924 to Lewis and Alice (Paul) Fozzard on the family farm north of Rising City.. He attended grade school at Centennial, District 50. He graduated from Rising City High School in 1942. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Doyle entered the US Army on August 28, 1944 and was sent overseas. He had been in action about a month when he was taken prisoner at Saarbrucken. As a member of a platoon of infantry men, which numbered 36, he was in the front lines, the entire group making an attack. When night came, there were but 12 men left, the rest were killed or wounded. The 12 dug in for the night and when morning dawned there were but three left, Fozzard being one of them, and they were surrounded by the Germans and unable to escape.
It was immediately after he was taken prisoner, that he was detained for 10 days at a camp, he then was placed in line with 1000 Americans, to start their march of 375 miles to Munich. About 70 miles north of Munich, on April 28, they met and were released by an American armored division. Cpl. Doyle Fozzrd wore two battle stars.
On July 31, 1948, he was united in marriage to Laverna Ann Hinze at Immanuel Lutheran Church. To this union, a daughter and son were born.
Doyle was a long time cattle feeder, also raising hogs and row crops. He served on various committees in the church and community. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, traveling, coffee with friends, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughter: Nancy(Lee von)Bernt of Osceola, son: Lee(Mary Jo)Fozzard of Rising City, 6 grandchildren: Nicole Bernt, Jason Bernt, and Heather Bernt; Tyler(Allison) Fozzard, Brooke Fozzard and Trevor Fozzard. 3 Great-grandchildren: Spencer Bernt, Adam and Dylan Fozzard, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Laverna in 2014, and one brother: Dale Fozzard.
