Dolores M. Birkel, 97, of David City, died Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at St. Joseph's Villa in David City.
Funeral Mass will be Monday, January 5 at 10:00am in St. Mary's Church with Msgr. Adrian Herbek officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery. A Catholic Daughters Rosary will be Sunday at 4pm at Chermok Funeral Home followed by a PCCW Rosary at 7pm also at the funeral home. Viewing will begin at 3pm on Sunday and continue until 7pm.
Dolores M. Birkel was born on March 2, 1911 at David City to John L. and Anastasia(Coufal)Havlik. She attended David City Public Schools, graduating from David City High School in 1929. She married Alfred "Fritz" Birkel on Sept. 5, 1933 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, David City.
She lived on a farm in the valley from 1933 until 1951, moving to David City. She was a member of St. Mary's Church and PCCW, Catholic Daughters, PEO, OWLS Club, Sunshine Court Board and Friends of the Library Board member. Her passion was books and she thoroughly enjoyed reading, as well as traveling, and attending family events, as family was a very important part of her life. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge.
She is survived by her children: Lane and Dee Ann Birkel of Brady, NE; Susan and Ellis Freitag of Houston, TX; Beth and Wayne Fricke of Santa Rosa, CA; 6 Grandchildren and 9 Great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fritz in 1976; and one brother: John Howard Havlik.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers: Memorials be directed to St. Joseph's Villa.
