Bernice Ann Briza, 83, of Elkhorn, formerly of Schuyler, passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 2015 at the Life Care Center of Elkhorn. A Funeral Service for Bernice will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, 11/11/15 at the Svoboda Funeral Home North Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 p.m. at the North Chapel. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, one hour before services. Burial will be in the Schuyler Cemetery.
Bernice was born June 18, 1932 to Alfred H. and Marie J. (Schmidt) Lund, on a farm southeast of Plainview, Nebraska. Bernice grew up on a farm in Clearwater where she attended Plainview Grade School until the 3rd grade then went to the Clearwater School, graduate from Clearwater High School in 1950. She was involved in the mixed chorus placing “Superior” 2 consecutive years at the O’Neil District Music contest. Prior to her marriage, Bernice worked as a bookkeeper at J.C. Penney in Norfolk. On December 20, 1953, Bernice married Donald Briza at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk. Together they farmed on rented property and later bought a farm in Norfolk. Bernice and Donald divorced in 1997. She loved music, beautiful clothes and jewelry.
Bernice is survived by a son, Reginald (MaryAnn) Briza of Columbus, daughters, Beverly Mousel of Schuyler, and Brenda (Mike) Bridge of Omaha, grandson, Nick (Amanda) Mousel of Columbus, great grandchildren, Caleb, Hayden, Presley and Brooklyn Mousel of Columbus. Brothers, Jack (Ruth) Lund of Bertrand, NE, Melvin (Elaine) Lund of Parkston, SD, Roland Lund of Oklahoma, sister, Arlene Smith (Frank) Torres) of Sherman Oaks, CA, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband Donald Briza, son-in-law Rick Mousel, brother, Leroy Lund and his wife Juanita, sister, Betty Walters and her husband Ivan, niece Kathy Walters, brother-in-law Bob Smith and great grandson Gabriel Mousel. She was also preceded in death by her beloved dog Sparky.
